Top 5 virus hoaxes and pranks

Viruses are no laughing matter, but some of the hoaxes and pranks are meant for a giggle. So here’s the top 5 hoaxes and pranks.
1. Good Times - User are warned that opening an email with Good Times in the subject line would erase their hard drive, destroy their processor, demagnetize any nearby electronics and kill their dogs. It made its first debut around the early age of the internet around 1994.
2. 48 Hours - This is a relatively recent hoax claimed that hovering your mouse cursor over the infected email was enough to activate it, wiping out not just your hard drive but also your BIOS too.
3. Life is Beautiful - Emails circulated warning of a powerpoint presentation called Life is Beautiful that if clicked would erase your hard drive and give the sender your username, email and password.
4. Honor System - This email contained no payload, instead asking recipients to manually delete all files on their hard drives and to forward the message to everyone in their contact lists. Participation of course was completely voluntary. The best hoax that made me laughing :D
5. Lion’s Den - Aptly named, Lion’s Den originated from a porn site, looking to draw hits. The email warned of a new deadly virus, providing a link for more information. Instead recipients got an eyeful.

How to fix infected Autorun.inf in your external drives

This problem occured several months ago, when the entire laptops and computer in my house were beleaguered with damaged Autorun.inf. I can vaguely recall the other symptoms of this problem but apparently I can’t double click to open my external hard disk and pen drives. Alternatively I need to right click on the external hard disk / pen drive icon and select open.
I didn’t apply any fixes back then because I couldn’t find any. I just realized the problem has long gone after I replaced AVG with Avast, obviously the virus/worm managed to sneaked up on AVG defense line.

Super-fast internet is coming

Yesterday’s headline (local newspaper) reads: “THE Internet will become obsolete soon”. Flabbergasted at this headline, I made a quick search on Google as I keen to know what kind of technology is capable of completely overhauling the internet connection into a hyperdrive. This ground-breaking technology (the grid) will enable connection of 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection.
While I’m thinking such a technology is just a mere possibility, this technology will make its debut this summer.
The latest spin-off from CERN, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.
David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.
The power of the grid will become apparent this summer after what scientists at Cern have termed their “red button” day - the switching-on of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the new particle accelerator built to probe the origin of the universe. The grid will be activated at the same time to capture the data it generates.
This meant that scientists at Cern - where Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the web in 1989 - would no longer be able to use his creation for fear of causing a global collapse. This is because the internet has evolved by linking together a hotchpotch of cables and routing equipment, much of which was originally designed for telephone calls and therefore lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission.
By contrast, the grid has been built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, meaning there are no outdated components to slow the deluge of data. The 55,000 servers already installed are expected to rise to 200,000 within the next two years. More…

Eventhough the possibility of the grid to be available to domestic internet users is very unlikely in the near future, we can still envisage the huge impact of this breakthrough. Everything that seems impossible previously such as holographic video conference will become a reality.
